In talking about managing and leading, I often say that you can shout or teach. You just can’t do both at the same time. This was a truth that came home to me when I heard a store manager I worked for raking one of her subordinates over the coals. Shortly before I left her store I told her how much more effective she would be—at least in working with people like me—if she reprimanded less and taught more. In this piece from Smashing Magazine, Christopher Butler uses the same words in a different and thought-provoking way. While I was using the terms to describe a leadership choice, Butler uses them to talk about marketing communication. It’s a great read. You can find it here.
