Both in political and personal discussions, we often find we’ve been misunderstood. Misperceived.
What we believe is not what our friend/political audience, thinks we believe.
There are values we cling to with passion, and the people we care about have no clue.
There are things we’ve done and they are totally unaware.
This is a real problem, both for the people we love and for the movements we believe in.
It’s one thing to be disagreed with. It’s another to be misconstrued.
There are so many times we agree and don’t realize it. Or disagree and think we’re of one mind.
It’s a wonder we can ever unite to accomplish anything.
I can’t offer a solution. A quick one anyway.
But here are some questions I think can help get us started.
Things to ask
- How do we identify and disarm our own misperceptions?
- How do we correct our distorting filters?
As we communicate with others:
- How do we stop adding to false perceptions?
- How do we bring factual clarity into the conversation?
