If hypocrisy is a problem, why don’t we just solve it?
Actually, hypocrisy is quite useful in these conversations as a battering ram against whomever it is you oppose. (Almost as useful a blunt instrument as Begging the Question.)
Without the other guy’s hypocrisy, we would lose half the cases we otherwise think we’ve won.
Nevertheless, in the spirit of improving discourse, I propose we reduce, if not totally eliminate, hypocrisy from our midst.
There are only two ways to reduce hypocrisy in a culture:
- Make better people.
- Eliminate virtue.
Notice which path is the easier one to take.
Hypocrisy is a tribute that vice pays to virtue.
