So I posted a piece last night about my own processing of Rubio and immigration and Gangs of Eight—
By the way, I hate that “Gang of _____________” formulation, don’t you? It’s funny how every one of them has Schumer and McCain in it.
Today the counterattack from the Cruzers.
These people are brutal.
I know. I’m one of ’em.
But here’s the deal:
It’s not too early to defend your guy.
It’s way too early to be shooting down the other guy.
You see, the question is not whether I prefer Rubio or Cruz.
It’s the fact that I like both of them—and prefer Cruz.
But a lot of people in my Twitter feed—whom I like, and who I follow because they represent important schools of thought—are getting blown away by Rubio.
And Rubio is totally knocking it out of the park right now.
I mean, look at this guy, who’s not a Cruz hater:
Personally, I think Cruz is oozing with charisma.
And it’s the right kind. The kind that ticks off the principal and frightens your parents.
And, with all my heart, I believe the next president is going to have to carry that kind of cool into his dealings with Congress and foreign powers if we’re going to turn this thing around.
But what if Rubio wins the nomination?
Can I re-embrace him like I did before, defending him, explaining him, championing him among my friends?
I believe I can. But that’s not a knock on any other candidate.
